Oswego Community Hospital is operates a sexual assault program in cooperation with the sexual assault response team (SART).   This includes the start of the Labette County Case Review Team (CRT).
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a nurse with advanced and specialized training in the field of forensics. They are trained to do examinations on sexually and physically abused victims. Along with the physical exams, they are trained to testify in court and are considered experts in their field.
The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is the organizational structure of the program. It entails all the team members. SANE nurse, County Attorney, Law Enforcement, Social Workers, Crisis Center, Children's Advocacy Center. All team members get involved at some point depending where the case is at the moment. Some of these members will get involved at the beginning of a case while others will be the last to get involved.
The last part of the team is the Case Review Team (CRT) which is made up of the SART team. These are a monthly meeting, where we go over each case in detail and also have peer reviews.
Our hope is that these services will encourage more people to report sexual assault and to get the care they need to recover physically and emotionally from their assault. Sexual assault is a crime of violence that has immediate and long-term effects on a victim. The initial response and ongoing support that a victim of sexual assault receives when seeking assistance has a profound influence on the victim's recovery.
We have a dedicated SANE room with experienced nurses to provide exams.
We are not limited to Labette County. We will be do exams from any agency requesting one be done.
We have provided exams from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and other states.
The State of Kansas through its legislative branch has set up criteria (statutes, laws) that we have to abide by. Also the fee's attached are scheduled and billable to the County where the assault occurred.
