Jessica Mayfield - Lab Director

Jessica Mayfield is the Lab Director at the Oswego Community Hospital.  She has worked as a Medical Technologist in the lab full time since 2007. In 2015 she changed her work status to PRN in the lab and returned to school to earn a master’s degree at Pittsburg State University. She graduated in May 2017 with her Master’s Degree. During the last two years while taking graduate classes, Jessica also taught high school life sciences at USD 247, and continued to work PRN in the lab for Mercy Columbus Hospital.

After two year of teaching, Jessica decided to return to her roots and pursue lab work full time once again.  “I returned to the lab to work because I like the challenges. This is my first week here as Lab Director and in this new role I will be facing more responsibility and different challenges than I have in the past. Many people may not want to work in such a small town if they were not from around the area, so I think this position and I found each other at just the right time, since my home is in Chetopa. It seems like perfect fit for the hospital and me.”

“Working here requires you to do every part of the lab work. If I were a lab director in a larger hospital I would not have that patient interaction that is found in smaller hospitals. Here I am responsible for all documentation, creating and maintaining policies and procedures, making sure the lab is keeping compliant with all local, state, and federal safety and privacy laws, and managing my staff.  As lab director here it is not just paper work, I also get to interact with the patients.”

“Being the Director here I see as a plus. If you have competent staff that meet the needs of the patients by giving them a good experience it will encourage people to want to come back for future services.”

I live in Chetopa. My husband and I currently have two sons. My kids think it’s pretty cool that I get to work at the hospital in the lab. I think it helps them when they go to the doctor’s office and need to get a shot or have blood drawn. They understand what I do and it seems a little less scary to them.”

Staff in the Lab Department include: Cassidy Wimp, Katee Camus, and Linda Vaughn.
